History:

The Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, which was started in 1956, has expanded over the years. To begin with, a comprehensive medical care service was started for the residents of Sweeper colony at Arthur road. From 1959 to 1965 Dr. V.N. Phanse headed the department. From 1966, Dr.(Smt.) Saroj Jha took over as Professor & Head.

Around 1977, the University of Bombay revised the Preventive & Social Medicine curriculum by introducing a full theory paper with practicals. T.N.Medical College received 3 mobile health clinic vehicles in 1978 under the centrally sponsored Reorientation of Medical Education (ROME) Scheme. The slum adopted for this purpose was Ramtek near Malad. Around 1980-81, a full-fledged Urban Health Centre at Shivaji Nagar was started. Cheetah Camp Urban Health Centre was started in 1983.

Dr.(Smt.) Nalini P. Pai took over as departmental Head in 1983 till 1998.
Dr. E.E. Daniel took over as the departmental Head from 1998 to 2001.
From 2001 Dr. R.Y. Aras has taken up the task of guiding the department in the new mellinium.


Activities:

    - HIV/AIDS Control.
    - Adolescent girls and child friendly city initiative.
    - Health care of vulnerable children.
    - Rural health development project.
    - Zero garbage project of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.

    - Health care programme for street children.
    - Childline services.
    - Multidisciplinary cell for child protection and prevention of child abuse.
    - Adolescent to Adolescent project to promote positive reproductive health.
    - Plan of action for child friendly city initiative.
    - Operation of community based multidisciplinary women, children and elders friendly centre.
    - Microplanning and operation of RCH.

    for children has been set up in Nair Hospital
    which is the first of its kind in the
    country in a Tertiary Care Hospital, for
