History:

The ophthalmology department existed since 1923 with Dr. C.R. Athawale in charge, succeeded by Dr. Hiralal Patel. Dr. A.M. Gokhale was professor and Head of the department. Dr. Gokhale was a stern disciplinarian, and expanded the ophthalmology department considerably. He continued his association with these institutions by attending every function. Dr. Abreu then became professor and Head of the department. Dr. Piyush Dixit succeeded him and was head of the department till 1984. Dr. (Smt) G. Murthy succeeded him in 1985 and continue till 31st July 2004. Dr. H.L. Trivedi is Ag. HOD from 1st Aug. 2004 till to date. The Ophthalmology department has two working Units. The Out-patient Department and Indoor-cum-surgical (operative) department function on all days of the week, with each clinical unit offering services on alternate days. The total bed strength is 42 with additional six beds. The outdoor and indoor eye care services renders routine, special as well as emergency services on all days of the week. On 6 days of the week, new case papers are issued from 8.00 am to 11.00 am.
