With the advances in ophthalmic technology the Eye Care Services are being rendered with advance diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in the following ophthalmic specialties namely:

- Advances in cataract surgery- Phacoemulosification
- Glaucoma
- Squint
- Contact lenses
- Ultrasonography
- Retinal and Laser therapy
- Eye banking and keratoplasty
- Community Ophthalmic services through Mobile Ophthalmic Van services
- Pediatric Eye Care Services through school eye screening

The department has been the pioneer in the establishment of Glaucoma and Squint specialized Eye Care Services in the MCGB, institutions since the last 2 decades. All advance modern ophthalmic procedures are carried out with successful visual results.


Milestones & Development in newer Ophthalmic technology commissioned:

    		•  Update new model of M-690 Leica Wild Operating Microscope with Attached Camera and CCTV installed & commissioned in the hands of DMC(P) for advanced & improvised teaching on CCTV for U.G. & P.G.
  •  
    		•  The Phacoemulsification Machine was received as a donation in the year 1999 & the advance technique of suture less surgery for cataract was launched. Also Non-Phaco, small incision cataract surgery are being conducted. Both help quicker & faster post-operative visual rehabilitation of patients.

    		•  Received Synaptophore, Auto Perimeter machine, Auto Refractometer and Auto keratometer.


    Community Ophthalmology Services:

    The community Ophthalmic services rendered to the slum population of Greater Mumbai is through the Mobile Van Services of our department to the Centers at Cheeta Camp, Shivaji Nagar and NSPB. Also in co-ordination with various voluntary Organisations regular Eye check-up Camps are conducted contributing towards the National Programme for Prevention of Blindness. Regular operative sessions are also held in these Eye Camps with good visual outcome. The Mobile Ophthalmic Van Services are improvised by the installation of various portable Ophthalmic equipments within the van, all of which are donated by a number of voluntary organisations. This is the only van of its kind in the whole of Mumbai metropolis catering to Eye problems at the patients doorstep.


    Collaborative work:

    B. Y.L. Nair Hospital has an Eye Bank established in the year 1969. It is certified and registered under subsection (1) of section 24 of transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 ( 42 of 1994) by Govt. of Maharashtra (Dated 29.9.98). Ophthalmic department in B.Y.L. Nair Hospital is attending to Enucleation calls & keratoplasties are done for the needy patients. The Eye Bank of B.Y.L. Nair Hospital has launched the Hospital Corneal Retrieval Programme in coordination with Rotary Club of Bombay Hills South with effect from July 2003. We also register the cases with Eye Bank Co-ordination and Research Centre, Haji Bacchooali Hospital, Parel, Mumbai - 12.


    Departmental Activities:

    Academic activities of the department range from undergraduate training programmes to advanced research projects, conducted to update the students and teaching faculties. The department conducts regular Workshops, Seminars, Symposiums, Clinical meetings, Journal Clubs and Case presentations. There are Publications in various recognized Journals. Members of the dept. actively participate in the local, zonal State, National and International ophthalmic academic/Scientific Workshops, advanced Courses and Conferences. This has enabled the staff and students to achieve academic excellence seen in the form of awards, merit ranks and prestigious positions secured at the National and International ophthalmic scenario.


    Nair Ophthalmologist Alumni Association:

    This unique association is launched with a view to pool the expertise and skill of ophthalmologists who passed out from these institutes and the present teachers and students in the interest of better patient care and ophthalmic education.
