History:

The Nephrology services at B.Y.L. Nair Hospital & T.N. Medical College were conceptualized & brought into existence by Dr. V.V. Shanbhag in 1962-63. Artificial Kidney Division with its Hemodialysis facilities were initiated with 3 Hemodialysis machines in 1981. The Nephrology unit was affiliated to Medicine & was then looked after by Dr. V.V. Shanbhag. First Live Related Kidney Transplantation was done in 1982. After Dr. V.V. Shanbhag's retirement in 1992 as "Honorary Professor in Nephrology" Dr. A.R. Halankar joined the dept. in the same capacity in Sept. 1992.

First cadaver kidney transplantation was done on 17-3-1997. Another two cadaver transplantations were carried out in 1998.

Dr. Kalpana S. Mehta has joined as Head & Professor of Nephrology since 12-02-2003.


Current Activities:

Out-Patient Services:
Nephrology OPD on Wednesday & Saturday; New case papers issued from 8am - 11am.
Kidney Transplant OPD on Thursday: 1.30 pm to 3.00 pm.

Indoor Services & Emergency Dialysis Services:
The dept. has total 35 beds inclusive of 8 in dialysis unit & 2 in Kidney Transplantation Room.

Provided 24 hours a day and 365 days of the year.
