History:

Medicine department existed since the time Dr. A.L. Nair started this hospital in memory of his mother in 1925. Initially there were 4 clinical units, which by 1969 expanded into 6 units including 2 full time unit. Dr. P.M. Dalal became the first full time professor in 1965. Dr. V.V. Shanbhag was the next full time professor to head the dept. He started several specialities viz. Nephrology, Diabetes, Thyroid, Hypertension, Asthma and Chronic Obstructive airway disease. Dr. V.R. Joshi took over the Dept. of Medicine and expanded the Rheumatology Clinic. Later Dr. K.D. Nihalani, Dr. A.J. Paidhunghat, Dr. N.E. Borges and Dr S.A. Kamath headed the department. Presently Dr. S.T. Nabar is the head of department.
