Achievements:

  • Dr. Bhatia is an Associate Editor in the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology. She also continues to be a scientific referee for the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, Journal of Association of Physicians of India and Journal of Post grade Medicine.

  • Dr. Bhatia is a Governing Council member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology
  •  
  • The Department was the first in the country to organise an International Therapeutic Endoscopy workshop. Many National level PG Updates and CME programs have also been organised. These programs have addressed issues in Gastroenterology as well as topics like Scientific Communication and Research Methodology.
  •  
  • The Department has instituted an oration award in the name of Dr. F.P. Antia, which is given to a prominent Gastroenterologist.
  •  
  • Dr. Shobna J. Bhatia underwent an Advanced Fellowship Program in Esophageal Motility and pH Disorders in USA.

    Publications:

  • The Department has over 200 publications in National and International Journals.
  •  
  • The book on "Clinical Dietetics and Nutrition" by Dr F P Antia is a bible for students in all branches. It has dietary requirements tailored to the Indian population and considers the vast variety of foods available in India for preparation of diets.


    First in India:

  • Dr. Antia pioneered the procedure of peritoneoscopy / laparoscopy in the country.

  • Established the relation of red chilli ingestion to gastric damage.
  •  
  • Established the dose response curves of gastric acid after stimulation with histamine.
  •  
  • Relation of dental plaque to spread of Helicobacter pylori by oro-oral transmission (in collaboration with Microbiology Department)

  • Seroepidemiology of H. pylori in India (in collaboration with Microbiology Department)
  •  
  • Epidemiology of hepatitis A in India (in collaboration with Microbiology Department)
  •  
  • Epidemiology of non-ulcer dyspepsia in Indian subjects.

  • Risk of dysplasia in the esophageal squamous mucosa in tobacco and alcohol abusers (in collaboration with Pathology Department)

  • Dr. Antia is founder member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology.

  • He established the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology in 1980.

  • Dr. H.G. Desai was conferred the degree of D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) by the University of Bombay for his work on gastric acid secretion.


    First in the city of Mumbai:

  • First to establish ERCP services.

  • First in Bombay to be recognised for DM in Gastroenterology in 1986.

  • Only dept in Mumbai to receive the Pfizer Amirchand Trophy for the best department in the country in 1980.


    Research Areas:

  • The department is involved with research on Helicobacter pylori, Gastroesophageal reflux, Dyspepsia, Acute and chronic liver disease, Therapeutic biliary and pancreatic endoscopy, Cancer surveillance, and Gastrointestinal motility disorders.
