History:

Clinical Pharmacology evolved as a separate discipline in India in the late eighties and the early nineties. Our department of Clinical Pharmacology emerged as a separate department on the June 1, 1995. Dr (Mrs) Nilima Kshirsagar founded this department.


Special Services:

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) activity:

The department performs the activity of monitoring drug levels of anti epileptic agents and lithium on a routine basis for epileptic and psychiatry patients at a nominal charge. Samples are accepted both from the wards and at the OPD, both from Nair hospital and other hospitals.

A Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) OPD is run every Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at OPD No. 17, first floor, OPD building. About 1000 - 1200 patients avail this service annually.


Ayurvedic services:

Dr Sharadini Dahanukar's Advanced Centre for Ayurvedic Research, Training and Services is run by the department. As a part of this Centre, the department carries out the following activities:

The Ayurvedic OPD is run every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at OPD no. 26, first floor, OPD building, where Ayurvedic specialists treat patients as per Ayurvedic principles of health and disease for various disorders. In this OPD, Ayurvedic drugs are dispensed free of cost. About 1500 patients avail this service annually.

Panchakarma Facility: The department carries out the following Ayurvedic therapeutic procedures known as Panchakarma.

  • Snehan : (oleation) for osteoarthritis, sprain and sciatica.
  •  
  • Swedan : (hot fomentation with medicated decoctions) for obesity, joint stiffness and sciatica.
  •  
  • Basti : (enema with medicated oils/ decoctions) for chronic constipation, low back pain.
  •  
  • Vaman : (induced emesis) for bronchial asthma, chronic cold and skin disorders.
  •  
  • Virechan : (induced purgation) for hyperacidity and skin disorders.
  •  
  • Nasya : (nasal drops with medicated oils/ ghee) for chronic sinusitis, migraine, hair loss, graying of hair.
  •  
  • Shirodhara : for insomnia, mental stress.
  •  
  • Agnikarma : for calcaneal spur.
  •  
  • Pinda sweda : for muscular dystrophy.
  •  
  • Kati basti : (oleatoin to the lumbar vertebrae using medicated oil) for slip disc, low back ache, lumbar spondylosis.
  •  
  • Tarpan : for improvement of vision.

    About 150 patients avail of this service annually.


    Clinical Pharmacology Ward:

    It is situated on the 4th floor of the department. Various phases of clinical trials and bio-equivalence studies are conducted in the ward on OPD basis Different equipment is available for carrying out pharmacodynamic clinical studies on drugs.

  • Treadmill & ECG machines for cardiovascular studies.

  • Memory Drums for evaluating memory enhancers.
  •  
  • Pulse Plethysmograph for evaluating endothelial function and blood flow.
  •  
  • Psychometric software for evaluating CNS functions.
  •  
  • Choice Reaction time apparatus, Critical flicker fusion apparatus, steadiness tester and pursuit meter with chronoscope for CNS function.


    Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring Cell & Drug Information Services (DIS):

    The department is a Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre for the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring activity of the DCGI. Adverse Drug Reactions reported from the various departments of the Institute and from private practitioners are documented at the Centre and causality analysis of the reports is carried out. ADRs of both allopathic and herbal drugs are documented.

    Drug information on various aspects of drug use is also provided by the department.
